It is now 2 years after Gatsby's death, Nick talks about what happened at Gatsby's funeral. There were many reporters and journalist there. People started making up untrue stories about Gatsby and his relationship with Myrtle and Wilson. Nick tries to have a big funeral for Gatsby because he thinks that is what he would have wanted, but not many people show up.The only people that come are Nick, Owl Eyes, some servants, and Gatsby's father. Tom and Daisy did not come, Nick said that they disappeared along with some of his other friends.Gatsby's father is proud of him and takes a picture of his house, and also tells Nick about Gatsby's early life.Nick decides to move back to the Midwest, he ends his relationship with Jordan. When Nick is about to leave he sees Tom in the city. Tom tells him that he is the one that told Wilson that Gatsby hit Myrtle. He says that he deserved to die. Nick realizes that Daisy and Tom think they can do anything because they believe that their money will save them. The night before Gatsby leaves he goes over to Gatsby's house, he looks up at the stars and thinks what it would be like if there were no people on the island. He wonders what it was like for the explorers, how they must have dreamed about life in America just like Gatsby have dreamed of life with Daisy.
It is sad that not many people showed up for Gatsby's funeral, but he really did not have any true friends. He spent most of his life trying to be wealthy so that he could win over Daisy.

Chapter 8
after all of the commotion that happened yesterday Nick could not sleep. The next day he went over to Gatsby's house and Gatsby told him that he waited outside of Tom's house to make sure he wouldn't do anything to Daisy. He didn't and Daisy never even came out of the house. Nick tells Gatsby that he should move on and leave Long Island. Gatsby does not agree to this, he said he could never leave Daisy behind. Then he tells Nick about the days when him and Daisy were going out. He says that he lied about his background because he wanted Daisy to like him and think he was good enough for her. When he left for war Daisy said she would wait for him, but when he came back she had already married Tom. Nick has been at Gatsby's house a long time he leaves because he is going to be late for work. As he is leaving he turns around and tell Gatsby that he is worth more then what he thinks he is worth. When Nick gets to work he is very distracted and cant do his work and even refuses to meet with Jordan later that night. Nick is now thinking about what happened to Myrtle.Nick starts telling what Mr. Wilson was saying to michaleis. He told him that he confronted Myrtle about her lover and then he goes on to say who he thinks hit her. He thinks that the person that hit her was her lover, but then he says it could not have been Tom because he came to the scene after it happened. Wilson goes to Gatsby's house. Gatsby is in the pool looking at the sky. Wilson shoots Gatsby killing him immediately, he then kills himself.Nick gets back from work and goes over to Gatsby's house and finds him dead. He imagines what Gatsby was thinking about now that his relationship with Daisy was over his life, his dream had no meaning.
I think Gatsby's death symbolises that his relationship with Daisy is over, so he dies because his has no reason to live. He spent his whole life waiting and dreaming about life with her and now that she is gone his dream and purpose in life is too.

It is getting hard for Gatsby and Daisy to keep their love a secret. Daisy says she is bored and asks Gatsby if he wants to go to the city. Gatsby is surprised by this question, and Tom has now figured out about their love for one another.Tom suggests that they all go to the city together so they do. Nick learns that Mr. Wilson has found out about his wife's affair, though he does not know who the man is. Tom starts to make fun of Gatsby by mentioning how he always says old sport. He also says that he lied about going to Oxford. Gatsby said that he did go just for a short time. Then Tom asks what is going on between him and Daisy.Gatsby says that Daisy loves him and not Tom.Tom then starts saying Gatsby has a bootlegging company.Daisy starts going back to Tom as the fight goes on,in order to prove to Gatsby that Daisy will not leave him she sends Daisy and Gatsby back home together. On the way home Daisy hit Myrtle. Nick gets back to Tom's house and finds Gatsby hiding in the bushes. Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy was driving the car when they hit Myrtle. Gatsby said he would take the blame for it. Gatsby is worried about Daisy so he tells Nick to go and check on her. Nick finds Daisy and Tom together eating chicken and talking. Nick leaves Gatsby alone in the dark.
Now that Gatsby has Daisy he never does anything anymore. The whole reason that he even did all the stuff, like the parties was to impress Daisy.Gatsby thinks that Daisy will leave Tom for him but at the end of the chapter they make up and Daisy forgets about Gatsby.

He got a job fishing for salmon and clams. One day when there was about to be a storm Gatz saw a yatch owned by a wealthy man named Dan Cody. When Cody died he left Gatsby 25,000 dollars but he did not get it because Cody's lady wouldn't let him have the money. So Gatsby spent his life trying to become rich. Tom does not really like parties but comes to keep an eye on Daisy.Nick does not have a very good time at the party and neither does Daisy. Gatsby wants Daisy to leave Tom and be with him. He thinks that he can get anything with all the money he has.
Gatsby dream has always been to be rich and live a glamorus lifestyle. he was born into a poor family and i think he was kind of ashamed about it.

The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald writings reflected his rough relationship with his wife Zelda. Their lives are a good example of the classic American dream. They went through some very good times and some very bad ones just like many people do. Fitzgerald was in debt a lot because of his and his wife Zelda's expensive lifestyle. The characters in his story The Great Gatsby shows what people were like during the jazz age, it also shows a great example of peoples obsessions and need for money, power, and hope. Zelda was very flirtatious and Fitzgerald was jealous, this caused them to have a hard life together. Zelda dressed provocatively and smoked cigarettes, many women dressed like this during the 20's, they were known as flappers, Fitzgerald liked the free thinking and hedonistic pursuits. These were some of the trends of the Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald also wrote about his wife's mental breakdowns and dysfunctional relationship.

The Red Badge of Courage paper
Throughout the book Henry is very selfish because during the war he only thinks about his needs and wants.
• Henry shows he is selfish when he leaves this dying soldier and doesn’t even try to help him. The dying soldier also known as the tattered man asked for Henry’s help and he tells Henry that he can’t die because he has kids and he has to come home to them. Seeing the tattered man near death is making Henry very uncomfortable and is causing him great suffering in his thoughts. He just watched his friend die and the thought of seeing another man die is too great for him to think about, so he leaves. The tattered man calls out to him as he is walking away, but Henry just keeps on walking. He shows no sympathy for the tattered man, he leaves because he feels uncomfortable and he is suffering. It is all about him and his feelings and nobody else’s. “The youth, who had been holding a bitter debate with himself and casting glances of hatred and contempt at the tattered man, here spoke in a hard voice. "Good-by," he said.” (Crane 10.25) When Henry gets into a situation that deals with his needs and the needs of other people he always does that thing that is better for his needs even if it will hurt other people.
• Another time Henry was selfish was when he kept Wilson’s letters. At the beginning of the book Wilson gives Henry some letters to give to his family because he thinks he might die. Henry thinks about giving the letters back to Wilson, but then he decides not to because he thinks the letters represent how weak and scared Wilson was at the beginning of the war. Henry thinks keeping the letters gives him some power over Wilson and if he has them he can also avoid any conversation about what happened to him the previous day. “He now rejoiced in the possession of a small weapon with which he could prostrate his comrade at the first signs of a cross-examination. He was master. It would now be he who could laugh and shoot the shafts of derision.” (Crane 15.9) This is very selfish of him because he knows Wilson already feels ashamed of giving Henry the letters and instead of being a kind friend and giving the letters back Henry is selfish and keeps them to benefit himself and to make himself look superior over Wilson. Once again Henry does the thing that he thinks is best for him, he doesn’t care if it hurts Wilson or anyone else as long as he is happy.
• The last example of Henry’s selfishness is when he carries the flag just because he doesn’t want Wilson to look like a better man than him. “The youth and his friend had a small scuffle over the flag. "Give it t' me!" "No, let me keep it!" Each felt satisfied with the other's possession of it, but each felt bound to declare, by an offer to carry the emblem, his willingness to further risk himself. The youth roughly pushed his friend away. “ (Crane 20.3) Henry and Wilson started fighting over who got to carry the flag. Whoever carried the flag was risking their life even more than the soldiers that were just fighting. The soldier that carried the flag also got more glory and honor than the other soldiers. This is a very good example of Henry’s selfishness, because he pushes his friend out of the way, not because he cares about his friend and doesn’t want him to risk his life by carrying the flag, but because he wants to seem braver and manlier than Wilson and he wants to receive the glory and feel like he is better than all the other men that are fighting.

Saving Private Ryan
Light and Dark- when its light out the men were fighting. When it was dark they were usually talking to each other about their lives back home. ex: the soldier who was talking about how he always pretended to be asleep when his mom came home and he didnt know why he did that.
silence and noise-when the seargant was thinking there was silence, this happened when there was a bomb and he couldnt hear so it seemed like everyone around him was quiet.
clean and dirty- The men that are still alive are clean because they are healthy and dont have a major wound that is bleeding everywhere. The men that are dead are dirty because they have been very badly wounded and have blood all over them and some are missing body parts.
ex: the guy at the beginning whose guts are spilling out of his body
youth and maturity-At the beginning of the movie the translator was very afraid to fight and would not kill anyone. He was just there to be a translator, I dont think he was prepared to fight. At the end of the movie he ordered around some of the German soldiers and killed the guy that killed some of his friends.
The dead soldier- the soldier that was talking about his mom and how he never talked to her he pretended he was asleep represents all the mothers at home who have lost their son/sons at war and will never have the chance to talk to them again.
The flag- Represents all the men that have died. When the soldiers die their mothers all get a flag to show that they served in the army and to show all the bravery and courage they showed.
manhood- At the end of the movie the translator finally shows some bravery and courage by shooting the guy and standing up to the Germans.
self preservation-At the beginning the translator was so scared and was always hiding and not getting involved in the fighting. At the end he no longer was so worried about his life and took a chance and actually killed a guy.
disregard for human life-All of them care about the lives of their soldiers, but they know in order to win and to save the lives of more of their men they must be willing to give up their life and the lives of the other soldiers.
Courage-I think all of the men in the movie showed courage at some point. They were all willing to risk their lives to save Ryan and then when they found him and could have gone home they stayed instead to help fight another battle.
