characters

Henry- he is the main character, also referred to as the youth. He goes into battle pretty confident and ready to fight, but then gets scared and runs. In the end he is known as one of best fighters.
Wilson- known as loud soldier. Becomes Henry's good friend. Takes care of him when he is injured, and shares many experiences with him in battle.
Jim- known as tall soldier. also Henry's friend, he dies in battle.
tattered soldier-he is a wounded soldier who Henry meets. he is kind of telling Henry throughout the book what he should do. or what he has done wrong.
lieutenant- Henry's commander. gets mad at them alot. Towards the end when Henry does well in battle they work together to motivate the men to keep fighting.
Henry's Mom- She does not want him to go to war.She represents one of the reasons Henry does not want to fight. He must come home to her.
