1. What does the title of this book mean? Be specific in your response, noting Henry's comments.
The title means when you get wounded in battle it is like your wound is representing a badge, because it shows that you have shown courage in the battles. Henry once said the he wished he had a "Red Badge".
2. What is the importance of the tattered man? What does he represent?
I think the tattered man represents Henry's mind. The tattered man makes Henry regret not fighting, but he also terrifies him at the same time.
3. What role does Henry's mother play while he is away from her?
She plays the role of Henry's reason to come home. She tells him he does not need to return just for her sake, that she can take care of herself. Henry knows that this is really hard for her though and that she is very worried about him. When he leaves to go to war she is crying in her garden.
4. How does Henry use the squirrel to justify his actions?
He throws a nut at the squirrel and the squirrel runs away. this shows Henry that it is everyone's natural instinct to run away, he is trying to justify to himself that it was alright to run from the battle.
